About Us

An Introduction from the Grand Fromage

Steven Campbell
Steven Campbell

Welcome to Lifford. From the beginning our mission has been to source the finest and rarest wines and spirits of both exceptional quality and value, provide exemplary service and give back to our community. We are guided by passion, commitment and true love of the culture of wine and spirits.

Since our humble beginnings as a two person operation, Lifford has grown to become Ontario’s largest supplier of premium wines to the restaurant and hotel trade.

In a world awash with global mega wineries and distributors, Lifford is also very proud to be ranked as the top supplier of “premium” wines and spirits to Vintages, the fine wine division of the Liquor Control Board of Ontario.

Our relentless pursuit of excellent products at exceptional prices has not gone unnoticed by the toughest critics in Canada … Canadians! We are grateful for such enthusiastic support and are humbled by our responsibility to stay attuned to the needs and values of our clients.

Commitment to Community is one of our core values. Lifford raises funds for a number of worthy causes through such annual charitable events as Boys' Night Out, The Grand Tasting, and Ladies' Night, to name but a few. In June of 2011 we were honoured to receive not one, but two LCBO “ELSIE” awards for Best On-Premise event and Social Responsibility.

Climate change is one of the most pressing issues in the 21st century. In an effort to be part of the solution, Lifford became a Certified Carbon Neutral Company. We measured our national carbon footprint and purchased carbon offsets. In 2007 Tree Canada honoured Lifford with the 2007 Eterne Award for our strong commitment to carbon neutrality.

A Bit More Detail…

In 1995 Steven Campbell purchased Lifford Wine Agency. As a seasoned restaurateur of twenty years, Steve was passionate about wine and jumped at the opportunity to acquire a small but excellent portfolio of Californian, Australian and Italian wines. Eager to expand the portfolio, Steven travelled the international wine roads to find regional superstars whose families owned the land, tilled the soil and breathed life and vitality into their wines.

Today, with two recent, exceptional acquisitions - Saverio Schiralli Agencies and Prevedello and Mathews, the company sells from coast to coast in all ten provinces, and represents several hundred meticulously chosen producers, a truly international collection of the world's finest wines and spirits. Driven by Steven's passion and expertise, the dynamic Lifford team of wine professionals has forged a unique national identity.

Mission Statement

  1. To set and meet the highest service standards.

  2. To stay attuned to the needs and values of our clients.

  3. To travel the world seeking exclusive wines and spirits from exceptionally dedicated producers.

  4. To give back to the community.

  5. To be part of the solution in the ecological challenge that faces our world.

Giving Back

With great success comes great responsibility, and Lifford has always been aware that we need to give something back to the communities in which we live and work. We also seek to lead and to inspire others as we search for solutions to the world's environmental challenges.

Philanthropy

Annually Lifford hosts a series of events that raise much needed funds for local and national charities. Here are some highlights:

  • The Grand Tasting in Toronto features more than fifty producers, attracts hundreds of thirsty trade and private clients, and provides funds for Delisle Youth Services, supporting families in need in Ontario. In 2012 the Grand Tasting went coast to coast, with events in Halifax, Montreal, Calgary and Vancouver.
  • Boys' Night Out is a fun night filled with all the toys that boys young and old desire. It raises funds for the Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation and Prostate Cancer Canada.
  • Ladies' Night has supported numerous women’s causes and in 2012 supported the Women Moving Women program of the Canadian Women's Foundation.
  • AIDS Walk for Life. With our partner Santa Margherita we raise funds in support of the annual walk and in 2011 contributed a record amount of more than $75,000.

Environment

  • We work with producers who use biodynamic, organic, or other sustainable agricultural practices.
  • Lifford is a carbon neutral company, certified first provincially in 2008 and then nationally in 2011 through our partner Tree Canada.
  • Lifford purchases hydroelectric power from Bullfrog Power which sources its electricity from renewable sources such as wind and solar.

I oversee the day to day operations of the company surrounded by a much admired, second-to-none team of extremely bright, hardworking, inspired, and fun-loving individuals.

Favourite Wine Memory

Over the years I have had the privilege of drinking some very fine wines, in truly beautiful settings, all very memorable experiences. However, if I had to choose just one stellar wine moment it would have to be in 1996 at a dinner at Château Cos d’Estournelle hosted by Cos, Taitinger Champagne and Maison Louis Jadot. It was a warm June evening. There was a symphony of wine and food and a sea of glassware on every candlelit table. The Maison Louis Jadot Chevalier Montrachet Les Demoiselles Grand Cru 1983 paired with lobster was nothing short of outstanding.

Favourite Grape

It is impossible to choose just one! White : Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling, Red: Sangiovese and Pinot Noir.

Favourite Wine Memory

Of the many exploits I've been privileged to enjoy sharing in, a safari adventure as guests of Boschendal in South Africa with my wife would top the list. A close second would be a Californian escapade as guests of Hahn Family Wines in Monterey (shared with the same wife!). Also crowding the top of that list are summer evenings spent at a private balcony table overlooking the lake sharing the Vin du Jour (the sommelier's slow though...)

Favourite Grape

The one in the bottle that's being poured into my glass…

Previous Life

Whatever it was it sure stood me in good stead for this one!

What Makes You Proud of Canada?

Everything! This is country of strength and humility, passion and involvement, pride and dignity, comfort and caring, tolerance and progressiveness, diversity and innovation, culture... and freedom. "I am a Canadian, free to speak without fear, free to worship in my own way, free to stand for what I think right, free to oppose what I believe wrong, or free to choose those who shall govern my country." (John Diefenbaker paraphrasing the Canadian Bill of Rights, July 1st, 1960)

First Job

Provincial Manager, BC

Favourite Wine Memory

With almost 40 years spent in this industry I have a number of fond memories; however, if I can only choose one wine moment, it would be from my early years, with no idea where I was headed. In May 1977, I toured the steep Thanisch Bernkasteler Doctor vineyards, high above Bernkastel, with two of my colleagues from a former company, led by the Thanisch vineyard manager. Following the tour, we had the privilege of a casual tasting of Kabinett, Spatlese, Auslese, Beerenauslese, Trockenbeerenauslese and Ice Wine, hosted at the Thanisch residence on the edge of the Mosel. Following the tasting, I stepped out to the terrace, with a bottle of the 1975 Ice Wine, sat down, and poured myself a glass on a magnificent afternoon. It was the first time I had seen the label, which I noted had a portion of a castle turret on the left side, with a view overlooking the Mosel with the Thanisch vineyards high above Bernkastel. It struck me that this was precisely the view I had from the terrace, and I have often wondered how many others have looked at that label over the years and had the honour of the same pleasurable experience.

What Makes You Proud of Canada?

November 11th, at 11.00 AM: “In Flanders Fields” by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, sung by the Vancouver Bach choir.

Your Inspiration

When I was active in sports, I learned that if you don't listen to the coach, or you don't arrive ahead of time for practice or a game, or you are not a team player, you will find yourself either on the bench, or out of the game, regardless of your talents.

Your Retreat

I have been fortunate to have been a member for a number of years of a private golf club, located 10 minutes from home. Located in a spectacular setting of natural beauty, high on the mountains, with the city of Vancouver far below, cellphones and any other personal devices for communicating with the outside world are prohibited; moreover, the staff will not advise any caller that a particular member is on the premises.

Actor Who Would Play You in the Film of Your Life

The script is almost completed. However, a problem persists as who should play my role. The director and I have agreed that Harrison Ford would be the logical choice, yet my wife Cindy and daughter Andrea insist on Walter Matthau who passed away more than ten years ago. My grandson Jordan chose Bill Murray. Encouraged with several cookies, he confessed that Brad Pitt was a close second.

Previous Life

Worked hotels and restaurants in Muskoka, Niagara, and Grand Cayman. After years of university to become an accountant, my Mom and Dad were “so proud” that I decided to drop out to become a bartender.  Years later, they have found the benefit of a son who always brings great wines to dinner.

First Job

Growing up in Muskoka, everyone I knew had a summer job as soon as possible. I was 13 and I worked at Santa’s Village as a “not so little” helper. It still scars me. Much to my wife’s chagrin, I sing Christmas carols in the summer.

Your Indulgence

Great food. I find it much less frequently than great wine.

Your Inspiration

Your Retreat

Favourite Wine Memory

I was fortunate enough to experience a five course vintage champagne/gourmet tasting adventure on a yacht in the Mediterranean with newfound friends. Among the new friends was a champagne dealer from Belgium who was celebrating a birthday, and after a private meeting with the executive chef, our pairings were planned and prepared. Accustomed to only drinking bubbly for celebrations or starters, pairing it with food was a revelation.

Favourite Grape

How am I supposed to pick just one grape? So many tastes, so many noses, so many colours. I love so many wines and the different styles in which they are made, but if I HAD to pick just one grape to be stranded on a desert island with, I would choose Pinot Noir.

Previous Life

Pre-Lifford, I:

  2. Worked in sales for a food distributor
  3. Saw as many concerts as possible
  4. Traveled whenever I could
  5. Cooked gourmet meals for the heck of it

I still do #s 3-5 but now I get to love my job too!

What Makes You Proud of Canada?

I love Canada's diversity. The only thing that is more diverse than the Canadian landscape is our people. Your Indulgence

Favourite Wine Memory

My fondest wine memory would have to be co-hosting an Il Borro and Castiglion Del Bosco wine dinner with Salvatore Ferragamo for 350 people aboard the Globe & Mail Mediterranean Odyssey Cruise ship while moored off the coast of Tuscany in Livorno. Before the dinner we sat on the ship's rooftop patio and crushed a few Heinekens while chatting about shoes and wine. How cool is that? Salvatore Ferragamo also gets primed for wine dinners with a few beers! His Il Borro IGT Toscana was among the first wines to enchant me into this business, and it was a complete pleasure to spend an evening with the man behind the wine.

Favourite Grape

In the past I've been lambasted for saying Pinot Blanc, but I was validated earlier this year when I hosted Mark Vlossak, President/Winemaker of St. Innocent Winery for an Oregon seminar here in Ottawa. During the white flight Mark raised a few eyebrows by saying that Pinot Blanc is one of the most underrated grapes and when it is done well there are very few wines that can compare. I agree, thus St. Innocent Pinot Blanc, along with Domaine Weinbach Reserve Pinot Blanc are some of my favourite wines in our portfolio.

Previous Life

Canadian National Team Rower. Funded by the province and Sport Canada, I rowed varsity at Queen's University for 6 years and with Team Canada for 2 years.

First Job

Probably scampering behind the tractor at 6 or 7 years old, transplanting little tobacco plants in the spots where the planter had missed. Growing up on a tobacco and vegetable farm, I didn’t really have a “first job” per se; there was always work to be done from the beginning.

Your Indulgence

Almost as much as I love wine, I love really good coffee. Pizza and oysters are up there as well.

Your Retreat

The golf course or my kitchen. I love to cook at home. So spending an evening with friends, preparing a hearty meal while slowly sipping some delicious wine and listening to great music is my picture of relaxation.

Your Playlist

Actor Who Would Play You in the Film of Your Life

This is a tough one. A young Jimmy Stewart would probably be ideal. But my character would have the style of Don Draper and the soul of Jerry Maguire.

Favourite Wine Memory

This must be my first ever glass of wine at age 10. We were on a family trip to Italy touring the wineries Lifford represents. At the time I HATED wine (ewww, gross) and was the pickiest eater imaginable. I was on the bread and chocolate diet, until we travelled to Tuscany where the bread wasn’t salted (ewww, unsalted bread!), so the chocolate diet it was.

One of our stops was to Talenti, a spectacular winery in Montalcino. After getting horribly lost we finally arrived and were greeted with a traditional Italian multi-course lunch with wine pairings (i.e., my HELL). After seeing I wasn’t drinking the wine the eighty-something year old grandfather Talenti inquired through his translator why I wasn’t drinking. When he found out I did not like wine he furrowed his well-creased brows and grumbled before throwing up his arms in a eureka like moment. He shuffled to the back of the restaurant, dug around and triumphantly pulled out “a sweet wine for the sweet girl” and all of a sudden I had myself a pairing for all of that chocolate.

I was in Austria for a conference and we had eaten at this wonderful old restaurant. ( I know old in Austria goes without saying). After dinner we were led to a 300 year old wine cellar and treated to some pretty spectacular wines. Favourite Wine Memory

I took a wine class at Willow Park Wine and Spirits, which was a fantastic experience and is what made me fall in love with wine as much as I love food. I bought the tickets as a birthday present for my girlfriend when I was 18 and the instructors did an excellent job sharing their enthusiasm and expertise, presenting wines from different regions each week. I learned the basics of food and wine pairing and from that point on was hooked on learning all I could.

Favourite Grape

I find it difficult to definitively pinpoint my favourite grape, especially when there are so many different factors that can affect the outcome of a wine. I can say I have never turned down a medium to heavy bodied red, such as a Malbec.

Previous Life

I come from a hospitality background where I worked both front and back of house positions while going to school. The majority of my work experience consisted of bartending and serving in popular Calgary restaurants and bars. In the earlier parts of my career I also worked and supervised in restaurant kitchens, which developed my passion for cooking.

What Makes You Proud of Canada?

Canada has one of the most beautiful and interactive outdoors where I can do many different activities year round. Your Inspiration

Your Retreat

I retreat to two different places depending on the situation, if I'm exhausted and need to relax I go home and cook or bake with new recipes. If I have energy and time in the day I look for any excuse to go and play hockey, because I am able to forget about everything and simply relax.

Your Playlist

I listen to a wide variety of music ranging from pop, alternative, rock, but mainly country. The majority of my music library consists of country artists but I can appreciate many other kinds of music, too.

Famous Person You'd Most Like to Meet

Antibes, Southern France, where, years ago, we spent a glorious vacation at a house that has a year-round outdoor kitchen with a stone grill (need I say more…) – dinner preparation: picture the golden-tone sunlight of the Mediterranean, super-green trees, a truly blue sea in the background, a light breeze and: a large orange-white tomcat sitting on the harvest table, guarding paper bags from the market, baguettes and lettuce sticking out, some tomatoes and apples strewn about as if posing for a painting…Oh, the wine, right: our host got it from “around the corner”, and it was cheap, he said – he goes there every day. Perfect Côte du Rhône with perfect steaks in the best dining room imaginable, …my absolute fave number 1.

Proudest Childhood Moment

Your Inspiration

I am happy to sit in my garden after work and watch birds, trees, my flowers growing, “our” groundhog and “our” skunk scurrying about… And when my dog is with me, chewing happily on a bone too big for her, I am in heaven, almost in heaven that is, until I also have a bottle of good wine plus a good person to talk to. That is paradise.

Your Playlist
